Home Improvements

GVI Seychelles has been busy making some home improvements to our research base here at Cap Ternay. We are already lucky enough to be surrounded by fruit trees providing us with delicious mangoes, guavas, and bananas. However, we have decided to supplement the fruit we have by planting a number of vegetables around the base. An area has been cleared and the soil enriched using compost and we are now in the process of planting a variety of herbs and vegetables. It is hoped that in future phases we will be able to reduce the amount we have to purchase and lower our carbon emissions in the process.

This week has also seen us start work on the new SCUBA kit room. Much larger than the previous room and with space for the tanks and dive equipment, all the EMs have lent a hand in the design and construction of racks, hangers and storage space. As well as functioning as a storage room, it will double as our SCUBA repair workshop providing us with enough space to fix our equipment.

Moving back outside and all work and no play makes for a very boring time so we have cleared an area for a state of the art volleyball court. Using bamboo for the poles and a mosquito net tied between them, the finished court would not look out of place in an Olympic final (ok maybe that’s stretching it). The last few days has seen us fine-tuning our skills as we prepare for a big competition planned for before the end of phase.
