20/02/11 Cap Ternay Five Week Break

Five weeks into our expedition phase and this marked the half-way point for many of us. It also meant that we had to say a sad farewell to Fiona but a very happy welcome to Jen, Bas, Spike, and Nikos. During this change of expedition members most of us took the long weekend and traveled to some of the other islands, but a few chose to remain behind to help the new members settle into base.

Those of us to left caught a very early taxi, for a very early ferry to Praline. Here, Dan and Rachel chose to go diving with Octopus Divers, where they saw, 26 grey reef sharks, 4 sting rays, many bumphead parrotfish, and 1 baby turtle. Instead, a few of us decided to explore the island a little by going up to Anse Lazio beach, which is one of the Seychelles most famous beaches.

Eventually most all of us who went to Praline, made our way to La Digue, our final destination. Here we stayed at Bibi’s Vanilla Guest House, a quirky bright yellow house in the middle of an ornament and garden maze.

Saturday, Sam, Charlie, Susie, Rebecca, and Stephanie rented some bicycles and rode all around most of the island. We visited beaches some amazing beaches such as Grand Anse, and Anse Source D’Arent, which is one of the most photographed beaches in the world, at least it is now that we have been there. Then, we ended our day with a relaxing sunset on the Anse Severe beach.

While we were doing all that, Tegan, Emma, Kim, and Dan all grabbed their snorkeling gear and went for a fabulous Island boat tour. They visited both Coco and Felicite Island, where they danced with attention seeking turtles, who would bite if snorkelers stopped paying them attention. They also got a whole new prospective on snorkeling by getting to go cave snorkeling.

All in all, it really was the best weekend EVER!!
