27/11/11 Week 8 at Cap Ternay

The wind has changed direction so the bay is very choppy at the moment but it should clear up soon and the conditions are not too bad below the surface. Speaking of diving there have been sightings of sharks, turtles, rays and squid, surveys are going well and the 5 weekers are quickly learning their coral and completing coral spot dives. Their first coral exam went well and with the next one early this week they should be out surveying soon fingers crossed. Several people also celebrated their hundredth dive, cue the funny costumes, I wore wings and a tutu to mark the occasion.

The rain did hold off for the Friday BBQ which was kicked off in true GVI style with Beach Olympics. With events such as tug of war, spinney stick, hole in one, relay and 3-legged races plus the volunteers competitive spirit and a fair bit of banter it was a great way to round up the week ahead of the BBQ. The theme for the night was ‘Superheroes and Villains’ and despite everyone being up at 5.45 that morning, due to the tides, there were some classic costumes, a fantastic spread of food and the usual shenanigans.

It’s another busy week here on camp with many of the divemasters also heading to Beau Vallon at the weekend to do their rescue diver course. No rest for the wicked. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling like this place has become home, albeit temporarily, and it’s strange to think we have less than 3 weeks left. There’s still plenty of time for some more amazing dives and the well earned parties/R&R at the weekend though.
