26/04/12 Swim Club at Cap Ternay

We’re here at Cap Ternay primarily to contribute to the conservation of the Seychelles (and the world’s) coral reefs, but on occasion we get the chance to make a difference in the local community as well. The children of the President’s Village Childrens’ Home here on Mahe are keen swimming and snorkeling students, and now, so are the staff of PV.

Last Wednesday a group of eight PV staff members joined Liz, Sarah, Carly and Nicole for their first GVI swimming lesson at Back Beach on a perfectly sunny and calm Mahe day. Beginning with floating (which was quickly mastered by all), interspersed with fits of giggling and cheering, and progressing through to a variety of swimming strokes, the inaugural GVI Swim Camp turned out to be a rewarding – though somewhat exhausting – exercise for all.

Our aim is to provide the PV staff with the confidence to teach and supervise the children on swimming and snorkeling excursions without the need for assistance from GVI, and we think they’re well on their way to becoming adept aquatics! In fact, it was such a success that we’ve scheduled the next swimming lesson for this Thursday.
