07/07/11 Settling in at Cap Ternay

The site is amazing, next to a beautiful bay and immersed in an oasis of tropical fruit trees! Staff and other volunteers are really friendly and accommodating, and despite having been here only for a short period of time we already know each other quite well and are fully orientated around the camp. We learned how to use the compressor to fill the diving tanks and the radio, so now we can start with our duties. Went for a first dive yesterday and a second today, to get used to the boat (Manta, what a cool name!) refresh our skills and improve buoyancy underwater so that we don’t damage the corals once we start surveying. Turtles and lion fish have been spotted in the two dives together with other colorful reef fish.

Cannot wait to start the surveys once we finish our training! (Learning 90 species of fish sounds quite hard but doing it as a group is making it easier and fun!)

Volunteers head out in search of pineapples and other fruit around base
